Senators Scarnati and Pileggi Comment on the Passing of Senator Hal Mowery

HARRISBURG – Senate President Pro Tempore Joe Scarnati (R-25) and Senate Majority Leader Dominic Pileggi (R-9) today remembered Senator Hal Mowery as a good friend and a Senator who worked tirelessly on behalf of his constituents.

Senators Scarnati and Pileggi issued the following joint statement:

“Hal Mowery was, first and foremost, a great guy. Ask anyone who knew him, and that’s the description you’re most likely to hear: a great guy.

“Hal was intelligent, knowledgeable and compassionate, and he had a great sense of humor. When you worked with him, you always came away from the process with even more respect for the man and his abilities. He was a consummate professional in every way.

“We extend our deepest condolences to Hal’s wife, Phyllis, his entire family and his many friends. Words cannot adequately express how much Hal meant to us, both personally and as a valued member of the Senate Republican Caucus. We will always cherish his friendship.”

Senator Mowery served in the Senate from 1992 until 2004. Prior to that, he served in the state House from 1977 to 1990. As a Senator, he was instrumental in passing a sweeping welfare reform law that restored the value of work and improved long-term opportunities for many Pennsylvanians. As chairman of the Senate Public Health and Welfare Committee, Senator Mowery was a key figure in the development of a landmark HMO reform law that provides stronger patient rights and protections for those enrolled in managed care. In the 31st Senatorial District, he was known as someone who could cut through state bureaucracy to help local communities.
