Statement on the Governor’s Moratorium on the Death Penalty

(HARRISBURG) – Senate President Pro Tempore Joe Scarnati (R-25) and Senate Majority Leader Jake Corman (R-34) issued the following statement regarding Governor Wolf’s Moratorium on the death penalty in Pennsylvania:

“A moratorium on the death penalty is something that should be decided through an open and transparent process, not with the stroke of a pen. The Governor continues to emphasize transparency in his administration, while at the same time bypassing the legislative system that is in place which would allow for public comment on an issue such as this.

“In the past 35 years Pennsylvania has executed three people, with the last one occurring in 1999. This is an ideologically driven move by the Governor. The concern with a blanket moratorium is that it removes a tool district attorneys may use in prosecuting cases against accused killers such as Eric Frein.”
